Urban vs. Rural

Settlers first came to Nelson County in the late 1700’s, as Virginia residents pushed westward looking for new opportunities. Nelson County boasts the oldest western stagecoach stop—Talbott Tavern, the first Catholic cathedral west of the Allegheny Mountains —Basilica of St Joseph Proto-Cathedral, and the oldest order of Cistercian monks at the Abbey of Gethsemani. History plays a strong role in our community with a strong preservation effort for our key heritage assets, numerous museums, and historical sites for our visitors to enjoy.

Nelson County has a unique mix of urban areas and greenspace. There are four cities in Nelson County, Bardstown, Bloomfield, Fairfield, and New Haven, as well as one hamlet, Hunters Village. Please visit the Planning and Zoning website to view maps that highlight the types of development in our Comprehensive Plan. These communities work together on a variety of projects to enhance the quality of life for all Nelson County citizens.

Nelson County has also dedicated significant resources to our parks and recreation areas. The Fiscal Court dedicates $120,000 to subsidies for neighborhood parks in Bardstown, Bloomfield, and New Haven. In addition, the County has developed a 70 acre park with walking trails, baseball and soccer fields. The County recently purchased Wickland, home of three Kentucky governors. Renovations are underway, as well as expanding the opportunities for tourists to enjoy this historic site. And, Nelson County is home to My Old Kentucky Home State Park, which includes the Rowan estate property, golf course, and the Stephen Foster amphitheater which hosts the Stephen Foster Drama and other outdoor productions. Please browse our other attractions on the Tourism website at www.visitbardstown.com/tourism.
