Nelson County’s Economy

Our economy is diverse, with jobs in manufacturing, utilities, services, and construction. We also have a thriving agricultural sector that produces dairy, cattle, hogs, corn, tobacco, and hay, as well as keeping greenspace thriving among the developed areas. Manufacturing firms such as Tower Automotive, American Fuji Seal, Jideco, and Trim Masters employ 30% of our workforce. The bourbon industry is also a major employer with Barton Brands, Jim Beam, and Heaven Hill as our largest distilleries in Nelson County. Makers Mark also contributes to the economic base with facilities “just across the border” in Marion County.

Salt River Rural Electric Coop, Kentucky Utilities, Louisville Gas & Electric, as well as the Bardstown Utilities provide our utilities. These companies employ 17.6% of our workforce and deliver quality services at affordable rates. In addition, Internet Service Providers, such as Bardstown Internet Services and Bardstown Cable, offer DSL and cable internet with substantial capital infrastructure investments in Nelson County. All these providers continue to expand their infrastructure to support our growing community.

The service sector, including medical and educational facilities, employ 25.7% of our workforce. Flaget Memorial Hospital recently opened their new facility on Highway 245 and is poised for additional development on or near that site for other medical services. With their recent alliance with Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Nelson County will benefit from these expanded medical services. Driven by the residential development, our schools are also thriving. Bardstown Independent, Nelson County, and St. Joseph Parish provide elementary and secondary education for our youngsters, while St. Catherine College offers college programs for our undergraduates. Easy access to Campbellsville College, University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, Bellarmine College , and Transylvania provide additional educational opportunities for our students.

Another strong economic sector is the construction industry that employs 9.4% of our workforce. Growth in Nelson County is evident with strong construction activity in both residential and commercial projects. These companies play an important role in providing the infrastructure support to attract new businesses and residential development that will continue to diversify our economy.
